Take one look at any of Bex’s photos and you’ll see why Vegan Sparkles makes all the sense in the world – the woman radiates health, laughter and joy! After inviting Bex into my inbox each week by signing up for her newsletter, I was quickly taken in by her passion and her knowledge. As a sucker for good branding, her clear and beautifully executed brand also made me take notice. Bex has been kind enough to share some her branding story with us today, over to her:
As anyone who has read your blog knows, you aren’t shy when it comes to telling your story. How has your story and experiences affected your brand?
My brand and biz are very much a part of me, so they’ve really grown along with my story. Vegan Sparkles came about quite by accident really, when I chose to follow a vegan lifestyle in late 2011 and began blogging about my journey. Since then, it’s really grown with me as I studied at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, left my corporate job to follow my passions, and became a full-time Health Coach. My journey is very much reflected in what you see on the blog, as I’ve gradually moved away from creating and sharing healthy recipes, and towards emotional exploration and creating more coaching videos. Along the way I’ve also shared the behind-the-scenes struggles, lessons, tears and triumphs, all of which has allowed for an authentic connection that hits home with by beautiful readers and client.
Do you have an example/s of a time where you had to say a gentle ‘no’ to an opportunity in order to stay true to your brand?
Absolutely. Like most online biz owners, I receive oodles of offers of sponsorship and collaboration. I turn down the vast majority of them because they don’t align with my message. I view my brand as an intimate relationship with my readers – they trust me and I deeply honour and respect that, and wouldn’t dream of jeopardising it.
The first year in business is the most challenging. It’s so easy to get distracted by what everyone else is doing and to not feel completely confident in yourself and your message. It can be tough to stick to your guns when opportunities seem to be throwing themselves at you but it’s so worth it in the long run (promise!).
While branding is much more than graphic design, we all know these graphical elements are still oh so important! Can you talk us through your visual identity?
Oh, I’m SO incredibly blessed to have my very own, uber talented, in-house graphic designer in the form of my love, Dominic. He knows me better than anyone, so he often comes up with new graphic elements before I’ve even thought of them.
Beautiful graphics make me swoon and with the Vegan Sparkles visual identity, we aim for vibrant, fun, playful, and full of life force and energy.
As some readers may know, you have a bunch of eBooks available plus your signature program The Sparkle Project. How did you go about keeping a consistent brand with all of your products while also giving them their own identities?
At their core, my creations have the same underlying purpose – to help women get their sparkle on. It’s what I live for! So that helps so much with creating a consistent vibe of high energy and sparkle.
Creating my first business eBook ‘How to Create a Biz You Love (Without Losing Your Mind!)’ proved a little more tricky. I wasn’t quite sure how to move it away from the ‘playful and fresh’ look of my other eBooks, but thankfully my love came to the rescue with a sleek and sophisticated design that I loved.
An authentic brand will always grow with us. Has there ever been a time where you had to shake off some old but comfortable branding (whether it was visual or perhaps something emotional you were holding onto) to uncover something new and fresh?
Oh my goodness, YES! Change can be so tough. One example that springs to mind is my old website theme. I was so attached to it, even though it constantly broke and made me cry. But I was so scared to let it go and try something new in case that turned out to be even worse. Kind of a ‘better the devil you know’ thing. Of course, once I finally let go and upgraded, I wondered what on earth I was thinking.
Right now I’m in the middle of creating a completely new brand identity for my latest venture (and completely new website): SexySobriety.com.au. I’m so excited to have the opportunity to create something quite different from scratch. Once again, this biz was born out of my own experiences, so it’ll still be very much a reflection of part of me, but will have a much more sophisticated feel in contrast to the playfulness of Vegan Sparkles.
To wrap up, what does ‘Authentic + Soulful branding’ mean to you?
To me it means being true to myself and my message. When I log into my website, it has to feel like home. It has to feel beautiful so I feel excited and inspired to share my story and help others. When my closest friends visit my site and say “Oh, it’s so YOU!”, I know I’m on the right track.
